Going for
ICF Credentialing?

Logging in Your 750
Coaching Hours

MACC is your best platform to gain your coaching hours. Whether it is 100 or  750 hours as required by ICF,  or 15/30 hrs to fulfill your CCA certification requirements, you can earn this fairly quickly as MACC members.

Here are some tips:

a) Contact any of the Student Coaches or Student Coachees

Work out with each other a peer coaching
arrangement where both of you can mutually gain coaching hours from each other. Remember, there are 70 of us now, with the shared goal of becoming ICF credentialed coaches. There is so much common ground for us to gain the highest coaching credentials in the world.
So, waste no time.

b) Be an Associate Professional Coach (APC)

Once you succeed in getting this APC status from CCA, your coaching hours will keep rolling in. Either it is through mentor coaching where CCA has a constant supply of coach students taking its programs, or getting coaching assignments that may come along the way from time to time.

This credential will give you added 'ammunition' to get more coaching clients for more $$$ and coaching hours.

For more details call Josephine at 03-62054488 or email her at josephineong@corporate-coach.com.

Benefits of joining MACC:

Ending 2011 with a BANG!

"Year end" to some of us means it's time to celebrate, to let our hair down and to some, it means rushing deadlines to close the year-end financials.

To MACC, it is closing the year 2011 with a BANG!  MACC has gone through milestones of achievements since its inception on 16 January 2010.  From 24 members then, MACC today pride itself as a recognized national coaching body that has spread its wings across Malaysia and abroad with 75 members.

Through the guidance of Dr Michael Heah (Chairman of MACC), the leadership of Bob Lim (President of MACC), and the unselfish and collective efforts of the MACC Executive Committee (Exco), the 3"Strategic Thrusts" initatives which were shared at the 2nd AGM ie Consolidation, Expansion and Education have been deeply entrenched in the many activities and events that were organized for members.

These included: Monthly Roundtable Meets, Coach Referral Service, Coach Buddy Network, Coaching Voice, Coach Loop, Coaching Competency Validation and the joint CCA-MACC Graduation & Networking Nite.

And of course, the latest closing activity for the year was our recent 2-day Coach Camp from 19 to 20 Nov 2011.  To many of the campers, the greatest ‘take-away’ besides the friendship, fun and learning activities, was the co-coaching sessions where their coaches painstakingly prepared and presented to their coachee, their very own Source Document for 2012's Goals & Targets.

The next event coming up is MACC’s 3rd Annual General Meeting on 25 February 2012 (Sat).  I urge you to block this important date in your diary as it is your privilege and responsibility to elect the new MACC Exco for the new term 2012 – 2014. We look forward to the new Exco to take MACC to the next level.

Finally to all our members, MACC Exco would like to say "Thank you" for your invaluable participation and your "communitarian spirit" – you have made MACC's presence, impact and reach significantly better than in 2010.

Here’s wishing you and your family, Seasons’ Greetings and a Successful & Happy New Year 2012!  Keep coaching and let the spirit of love gently fill your hearts and homes. May peace, love and prosperity follow you always.

With fondest regards,

susan ong

Some sharing on the Coach Camp...

Here's what Simon, the Games Master has to say :

Q. At the recent Coach Camp, what was the greatest memorable moment for you? And your take-away?

A. My greatest memory is revitalisation of the great positive energy from all the participants. Their positive mindsets, passions, perseverance, patience, caring, sharing and fun-creating environment give me a lot of energy for me as a Game Facilitator as well as a participant throughout the camp.

And Armelle has this to say:

Q. Lastly, at the recent Coach Camp, what was the most enjoyable and memorable part of the 2 day camp, and anything you would like to share about?

A. The food: Aha...

I loved Simon's games, the very interesting coaching session I had with my coachee, and all the non formal discussions with my peers. It was really a great time; I am eager to attend the next one!

"Members Meet Members"

Close-up Interviews with MACC Members

As we aspire to be a close-knit coach community, it is good to know our members better. Let's get to know the next 2 members : Armelle STOLTZ and Simon YAP who recently graduated from the CPC program.

Let's meet Armelle STOLTZ

armelle

Q.  Armelle, where do you hail from?

A. I arrived 2 years ago with my husband and 3 daughters, straight from Paris, France.

Q. What got you into "coaching"?

A. A combination of helping people, meeting Malaysian friends, and developing myself.

Q. How do you use "coaching" - professionally and in your personal life?

A. You don't use "coaching", you live a "coaching life". Coaching never leaves you. It is in your spirit. This is a state of mind, a way of life.

- In my personal life: I try to focus on enhancing my relationships: better communicate, and say more things and feelings as well as positive and negative ones!

- In my professionnal life: all my actions are "coaching-based", which means they are oriented by "listening, discerning, assertivity and not imposing solutions" etc.

Q. How have the experiences been?

A. I have grown up, got self-confidence, and discovered a new world: a world of awareness and creativity.

Every experience with a coachee is a new one, and my mind gets richer after every coaching session, as I get so many rewards.

I am so happy I have chosen to attend CCA classes! My goal is to push more and more. I cannot stop coaching!!

Q. What would you like MACC to do for members?

A. Maybe do more adds for coaches, like a "coach place" anybody from
external corporates could consult; every coach could have his own page
with the name of her/his company+ contact+speciality, organizing
meetings to share information about how to launch a coach company
(sharing experiences).

Q. How can you contribute to MACC?

A. With energy, and in promoting CCA when I will be famous very soon!

Thank you, Armelle, and here's wishing you a great Coaching Year in 2012 and see you at the 2012 Coach Camp!

Let's now meet Simon YAP

simonyap

Q. As a trainer, how do the coaching skills you have acquired make a difference to what you have always been doing?

A. In my early training career days, the training is mostly done in old-fashioned teacher-student learning style. As I learn and internalise the coaching skills over the years, it changes my training method. Every training session is designed to ensure that I listen to the audience's concerns; ask insightful questions; and seek for their action plans and managing accountability at the end of the training. Often, I see many happy and satisfied faces after the training sessions.

Q.   What advice do you have for other trainers to do what you have done ie take up a certified coaching program?

A. The teacher-student training is dead, in my view. Unfortunately, I do encounter some trainers who still follow this old-fashioned training style. Increasingly, many have acquired facilitating skills as the training industry evolves. Being a certified facilitator, I realised that there are some inadequacies where coaching could complement. More often, it is the emotional competences that coaching always ensure that the learner (coachee) gains maximum learning benefits intelligently and emotionally.

Q.  How are you going to move your life forward like what you will do for others?

A. Live life to the fullest. I am moving into a full-time professional coaching profession. It is my passion to maximise people's potential and it is quite satisfying seeing people able to achieve what they thought they can't initially. Personally, it is a big change in my professional and personal lives. But, I am looking forward to this exciting and challenging journey as I believe I can do it with excellence.

Q.  What are the greatest insights you have gained in your journey to be a certified coach?

A. Being a certified coach that always demonstrate intelligence and emotional competences.

Q.  What do you like MACC to do for members?

A. I reckon that coaching is an emerging trend in Malaysia. Many individuals and organisations still do not have great awareness about the value of coaching and how it increases ne's capability and performance. On this score, MACC could play an active role by reaching out to the organisations; propagate the greatness of coaching awareness and set coaching standards (benchmark) in the Malaysian marketplace. Provide them a list of certified coaches that they can call on. Also, certified coaches could provide complimentary (or at cost) coaching service to organisations that are keen on talent development.

Q. How can you contribute to MACC in the coming year?

A. As I am specialising in sales coaching, leadership coaching and trainer coaching, I am available to any member and student coaches who are keen to explore and develop their expertise into this areas.

Thank you, Simon, and we look forward to you playing an active and energetic role in MACC in the coming year. And,we wish you the best in your future career.

Article

In the last issue of Coaching Voice, our interview with Sandeep revealed that it would be good to run articles on Coaching in this newsletter for our readers.

Helping People to
Self Discovery

by

Dr Michael Heah,
PhD, PCC, CPC

av&mh

All coaches are trained to ask two very important questions.  The first is: “What do you want to work on? And the second is: “How do you want me to support you?”

From that point, the coach’s client whom we call “coachee” begins an insightful journey of discovery and self realization to find answers that they believe they would never grasp.

Coaches are very special people with a special set of skills, who, after setting the coaching agenda at the outset of the coaching relationship, walk with the coachee along a well-defined path that eventually takes them to their goal.

A coaching agenda can be built around any issue.  As an example, for someone who engages a LIFE COACH, the agenda can range from building relationships to acquiring a healthier work-life balance.  For someone who takes on an EXECUTIVE COACH, it can involve helping a person to boost their performance to a higher level or to prepare them for promotion.  As for a BUSINESS COACH, the agenda can involve helping an organization to gain more market share. The list goes on and on.

Every facet of life can lend itself to coaching.  After all, in its ultimate sense, coaching is about supporting people to attain higher performance in different aspects of their lives.  For example, a happy person is a good performer who knows how to manage the affairs of his or her life. An effective executive is also a good performer for he or she knows how to manage the dynamics of the organization and likewise a successful business person knows how to navigate through the challenging terrain of the marketplace.

This creates plentiful opportunities for people who are skilled in a particular area to be coaches in that niche. They are guided by a true passion for something close to their hearts and furthermore they are endowed with special skills.

However, on its own, having a specific skill set or being an expert on some subject is not enough. A good coach needs highly developed "process skills". This means they are adept at facilitating, eliciting and challenging the coachee along the path towards self discovery. As opposed to delivering "free handouts" as may be done by many other professionals seeking to help, a coach uses a highly skilled non-directive approach that manoeuvres the coachee's mind towards self discovery.
This broaches a very important point: becoming a genuine coach is not an automatic qualification - say, for someone who has skills alone or years of experience or an impressive record in people-development matters. All coaches require formal skills training and must acquire a "coach outlook" that can propel people forward in a natural process towards their goals.

Dr Michael Heah is the Chairman of MACC & anICF credentialed coach. He may be contacted at mikeheah@corporate-coach.com.
