COACHING REFLECTIONS

“Whatever shapes the future
takes ….

The men and women
who guide…..

organizations will
be different leaders than the ones we’ve become used to. They will be maestros, not masters; coaches, not commanders.

“Coaching will become the
model for leaders in the future. Coaches teach, mentor, and empower.

Leadership can be learned and terrific coaches will facilitate the
learning to achieve this”

By Warren Bennis

ALERT!
Where are all the Coaches and Coach Buddies?

We have been and are still waiting for you, especially those currently pursuing their coach certification to post their names either as Student Coach or Student Coachees in the Coach Buddy and Coach Referral Sections of our MACC website.

We got this feeling that you either have forgotten or have some reservations about being more visible in the cyberspace. We are not sure what it is and we do not want to make any guess.

So, we are inviting you to help support our CRS & CBN by permitting us to put your name & particulars online at the MACC website.

MACC Car Sticker

sticker

Have you got this? It is valid for a year from now till 2011. We will be giving out this for free to MACC Members!

This is a prominent endorsement of your national coach membership. It is a credibility stamp on your credential, either as a bona fide coach or about to be one in this one and only national coach organization.

If you have not received this, send us a mail by clicking here, and we will get it to you somehow.

Additional stickers can be purchased at only RM5!! On first come, first served basis.

Logging in Your
750 Coaching Hours

MACC is your best platform to gain your coaching hours. Whether it is 750 hours as required by ICF or 7500 hours required by any out of space coaching body, you can earn this fairly quickly as MACC members.

Here are some tips:

a) Contact any of the Student Coaches or Student Coachees
Work out with each other a peer coaching arrangement where both of you can mutually gain coaching hours from each others.

Remember, there are almost 50 of us now, all with the same shared goal of becoming ICF credentialed coaches. There is so much common ground for us to gain the highest coaching in the world. So waste no time.

b) Be an Associate Professional Coach (APC)
Once you succeed in getting this APC status from CCA, your coaching hours will keep rolling in. Either it is through mentor coaching where CCA has a constant supply of coach students taking its program, or getting coaching assignments that may come along the way from time to time. This credential will give you added 'ammunition' to get more coaching clients for more $$$ and coaching hours.

MACC AFTER 100 DAYS

Similar to prominent people in high office, the first 100 days is ‘report card’ time. Time really flies! We can’t believe our eyes that we are already 129 days after MACC became the first national coach association in Malaysia!

So how have we been doing and are we happy about it? It is an astounding YES despite the fact that a bagful of things is still in the offing.

Today, MACC boasts of having 48 members and more are likely to join. We are only doing a low-key recruitment drive so that we do not have too much on our plate for the first year, thus enabling us to focus on delivering value to our members.  Pardon us for any shortcoming as we are all in a 'new job’; still learning the ropes of the trade in leading and managing a national coach association!

Our apologies if our activities have not yet reached out fully to some members, especially those from outstation and overseas.  Be rest assured that you are always on our mind. We are mulling over a series of national and international scale projects to benefit everyone.

Meanwhile, many eyes are being cast on us. Perhaps the 'advertisement' of our website: www.malaysiancoaches.com in the sign-off of Michael's Q & A Tues column in the New Straits Times is pushing up our visibility to the world!

Here is an example: coach graduates from other coach-learning organizations like University of Malaya Continuing Education (UMCEED), and Cambridge Association of Managers are showing keen interest in becoming members.

Our monthly Roundtable is also attracting keen and curious observers to know what we are doing. People are signing up for coaching programs because they want to be MACC members.

And, by the way, have you got your MACC car sticker? That’s another gift for you members.  If you have not, send us an email using this Contact Form. There’s so much more coming your way in the months ahead!

Indeed, our wheels are turning and at the right pace.  Please continue to give your support and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we sojourn in our first year of operations!

Enjoy our Coaching Loop - 2nd issue.

ROUNDTABLE EVENT & LEARNING REFLECTIONS

2nd ROUNDTABLE MEET:
"PRIMORDIAL SOUND MEDITATION AS A TOOL
FOR COACHES"

  anthonyrt2_talk

One of the benefits for MACC members is a monthly meet of seasoned and budding coaches including coach students, for them to hone their coaching skills.

The 2nd meet for the year was on 27 March and attended by more than 20 members and guests. Our guest speaker, Anthony Pinto, a Certified NLP Master Trainer, shared with us on how to create and experience inner calm and deep relaxation. In coaching term, we refer this to helping people (and ourselves) reframe or shift from a reactive to a responsive state of mind.

Primordial Sound Meditation is therefore a powerful tool to slow down our breathing, decrease our blood pressure and stress hormone level. The uniqueness of this meditation technique isn’t about forcing your mind to be quiet, but about experiencing the quiet that is already there! So what it means we can still meditate when we have the ability to access the inner stillness and calm that always lies beneath the choppy and troubled mind.

Indeed, this is a great reframing tool to help people achieve more through a more responsive and calm mind!!!

Our thanks to Mr. Anthony Pinto for an enlightening session.

3rd ROUNDTABLE MEET:
"IMPACTFUL COACHING THROUGH POWERFUL LISTENING"

 rt_talkboey

Our own homegrown Certified Professional Coach, Boey Mun Leong, led and facilitated a dynamic interactive session on 24th Apr on this highly required competency of listening.

The session was intended to raise our awareness on how ‘deficient’ we are and also in taking this competency for granted. In an assessment test to prove his point, it was found that 90% of us are visual, which means we heavily use this faculty at the expense of other faculties which are also needed like auditory (hearing for their choice and expression of words), feeling (accessing their emotions in their tone of voice), head ( interpreting the data in an objective manner) etc.

To prove his point further, the 30 participants were tested again on their listening skills when most of them could only score 60% accuracy in a narrated story that was filled with details.

rt3_coaching

The session was followed by a coaching clinic to gain practical tips to gain listening skills through a group coaching session where another of our homegrown certified professional coach, Helen, took a few of us as ‘coaches’ on an an issue she was currently facing.

4th ROUNDTABLE MEET:
"SPOTTING THE BLINDSPOTS"

rs

Once again, another homegrown Certifed Professional Coach, Rachel Sim, led and facilitated a thought-provoking session on blindspots and the role of coaches in helping coachees to be aware of them. The 11 participants were put through an exercise to identify the strategies to coach a coachee that has been identifed with well-defined blindspots such as relentless striving, insatiable need for recognition, unrealistic goals, etc.

     rt4_discussgopi

It was heartening to observe the participants engage in active and engrossed participation. Our special thanks to Tessie Lim and Michael Heah who helped to solidify the session with insights such as:

"If you identify the wrong frame, you will not get the right questions"

"This question is more like an interview question. To raise self-awareness, use challenging questions. Examples are: What fundamental law are you breaking? What is still missing in your goal?"

"See a pattern of behavior developing - be a pattern detective. Show them this is the cause and this is the effect. Is this want you want? To do this, ask a sequence of questions so as to allow them to come to an awareness by themselves. Avoid being confrontational."

r4_coaching

Participants then observed a coaching session where Wee Hen as coach helped the coachee, Vimala, to clarify her thoughts on a issue relating to her readiness as a coach as she has just completed her CPC.

The lesson learnt here is for the coach not to push her own agenda, avoid putting words in the coachee's mouth, go into deeper level of listening and identify the correct frame of the coachee for a tighter coaching session.

Interestingly, Tessie used Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to set the coaching agenda. In all, the participants were happy with the coach learning in this Roundtable.

We do encourage all MACC members to set aside time to attend the monthly Roundtable meet. Click on Events for the date and topic.

SELF-REFLECTION

HURRAY! I FOUND MY LIFE BALANCE susan

Recently my ex-boss whom I have known and worked with since the early 80s sent me an article written by Chetan Bhagat at Symbiosis. To quote him, "... Life is one of those races in nursery school where you have to run with a marble on a spoon in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point  coming first. Same is with life where health and relationship are the marbles. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die. ..."

In fact, we recently had a get-together, catching up and reminiscing the happy days we had backthen. I recalled those were the days that though we were very busy meeting deadlines, stress wasn't a common word then! Why is this so today?

Have our priorities changed? Maybe. Don't we all go through the same cycle of life - we want a good career with prospects, buy our own house, get married and have children and so forth? Have we in chasing our dreams and material gains, compromised and forgot about the importance of our health, friends and our loved ones? Have we gotten too tired that we no longer find what we do to be exciting anymore...like what Chetan Bhagat says "the spark will start to die"...

So what do we do? Let's not take life too seriously, after all we are here temporarily. Easy said than done? But, don't we all agree we must enjoy what we do; life is too short. Passion is the key ingredient and positive attitude towards life is the marinade. The days when I'm not feeling well or fell sick, I used to feel lousy and upset. But as a coach today, the little voice in me tells me that when I fall sick, it gets only into my body but it should not get into my spirits because how I behave will certainly affect the people around me, especially my loved ones. The more you give and share, the more you will receive and God will also refill that for us.

Our choices, not our chances, determine our destiny. Three years ago, when I decided to quit my full time corporate job and go on my own pursuits, I ask myself the question : "How much is enough?" Today, I am glad to have taken this decision because I have found my passion to be a coach and more importantly, helping as many people move forward in their lives as possible. So, enjoy life fulfillingly, don't sweat the small stuff. And, I always remember this from Richard Hoy, our coach mate who says "You don't have to be a millionaire, but you can live the life of a millionaire". Have a balance and you will have a successful life!
